Description
XIII is a stylish first-person shooter, released as part of Ubisoft's Christmas 2003 lineup (alongside Beyond Good & Evil and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time). The game is based around a French comic of the same name, and copies the graphical style from that comic, with cel-shaded graphics throughout and sounds replicated by active words. Cut scenes are presented in comic book panel style.
Story
The player starts on a beach, with no memory of who they are and where they have come from. The aim of the game is therefore to discover who the player is, and find out why he has "XIII" inscribed across his chest.
Occasionally, remnants of memory appear to the player (presented as stylised flashbacks). Other than this, no backstory is assumed.
Gameplay
While XIII looks very different to mode first-person shooters, the basic gameplay is not immensely innovative. In addition to the standar weapons, the player is able to use a number of items collected from the game world, such as syringes, broken glass, and chairs.
Stealth
The AI in XIII is relatively advanced, and the computer-controlled characters are good shots. It's therefore often necessary to sneak behind the enemy rather than attempt a front-on assault.
Controls
On the consoles, the joypad controls are not fully configuarable. Gamers who like to look on the left stick and move on the right will find this game hard to play; it would be preferable, therefore to get the PC version.
