- I have read the message re genres and will get round to looking at the material. It will be this weekend due to work. -- tyagi 01:01, 29 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for helping sort out the multi-format documentation and system. It looks good now. -- tyagi 20:39, 20 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Commented back on Genres. -- tyagi 05:11, 1 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- I've been offline for almost 2 weeks as we've moved house. I'm back now, so will get going on some of the stuff I said I'd take a look at. -- tyagi 10:56, 26 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- The structure of the disambig and series stuff is good. Only comment would be that it is not clear that the [[gamename|platform]] link in the first paragraph is linking to the game. It looks like it links to the platform. So I'd either put the full list of platforms/titles in the list, which may be nice and clear, or change the first paragraph to just read [[gamename (format)]] and leave it at that. -- tyagi 11:46, 30 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- * I agree about the legibility. The wording's not great, is it! Maybe we should just have a sentence saying that GAMEX was first released on the PLATFORMX, and then include that game in the list? Xevious 11:55, 30 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I think that including all the games in the list is the best way of displaying it. First time I read it, that was what I was looking for. -- tyagi 11:58, 30 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Blimey, that was tricky. There are a lot of games called Another World and Out of this World. Have a look at these two disambig pages - I think they work OK, but any suggestions? Xevious 16:02, 1 Sep 2005 (UTC)
- That's worked really well. I didn't know Another World was released on so many formats! Fantastic game series on the Amiga/ST, I remember playing them to completion. In other news, the MediaWiki software has been upgraded to the latest release due to some security holes in the last release. Should all be working OK and it's a job that only seems to need doing once every month or two. -- tyagi 20:31, 1 Sep 2005 (UTC)
- Regarding San Andreas PS2 version, the copy I had written was specifically for the Xbox version of the game and references that fact. With a little editing it should be fine though. What do you want me to do?
- Interestingly, the "Help Contents" deletion you saw was the same spam tactic as previously used a few days ago. The page looks blank, but in fact contains a large number of invisible URL links. Check the page diffs from the history. -- tyagi 01:57, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
- Can you delet this article: http://www.gamerwiki.com/index.php?title=PocketStation_%28PlayStation%29&rcid=7449 ? -- Saber-rider1 13:36, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
- Welcome back - any chance you could drop me an email at rik dot wade @ gmail d o t com? I'd like to run some ideas past you related to GamerWiki usage/advertising etc. -- tyagi 00:07, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
- I've been travelling for a couple of weeks. Am still in the UK but will be back and contributing next week. -- tyagi 14:29, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
- Where do I see Onion's data? -- tyagi 03:39, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
- Added you to my MKDS friends list -- tyagi 10:37, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
- Competition: That sounds like an excellent idea. We can't enter ourselves, obviously ;-) Please let me know before 23rd Dec what you'd like me to do to help organise it. -- tyagi 20:55, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
- Added you to MKDS Friend Roster --MTC 12:41, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
- So, with regard to lists of games, would it be worthwhile shoving the non-created items from the List of... page for PS2 onto the list of games to be added page, or would that be too big a hit for the page in one go? Additionally, should other platforms get organised the same way - create the category on the list to add page & insert the non-created stuff? --Barthax 15:42, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
We had a bit of spam thing going on last week, and I think we managed to get all of it. Fortunately, as new users are registered, a verification email is generated and the IP addresses etc. are all logged. Spammers will give fake email addresses, so I either get a bounce or the email gets binned by the recipient. There are some anti-spam features in MediaWiki, which we run, and some more are in development. It's just something we need to keep an eye on. -- tyagi 19:31, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree about the competition. Thanks for organising it and sending the stuff out. -- tyagi 02:47, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
- Just to let you know, I'll be back online regularly on Wednesday, and have written a Perl script to produce templates automatically. It needs some polish, but the basics are there. I just need to do one to automatically grab the cover art and the regular update process should be more streamlined. -- tyagi 11:34, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
Hiya its Domino can you tell me how to add Covers to games that don't have one looks a bit confusing
Sorry, I miscounted the total number of games. I must have been half asleep. -- tyagi 21:22, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
Template namespace
- I'm still very nervous about polluting the Template namespace with specific game templates, such as the Ocarina of Time one. Can we summarise the problem we're trying to solve with this method in Policy Discussion and see if there's another solution? We've not gone far down the road with this approach just yet and it's not too late to change before we get in a pickle. -- tyagi 12:04, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Redirections
- Please don't delete the redirects! They are very useful for people searching for the correct page. Those looking for (ie Super Smash Bros will most probably want to go to Super Smash Brothers (Nintendo 64) Halo 12:02, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Do we want redirects, and/or Disambiguation pages? If there's just one release of a title, then perhaps a redirect could be useful in some cases? If there's multiple releases, a Disambiguation page is more appropriate. However, if someone searches for "Warioware Touched", then they will get a hit for the DS version given that it's the only release anyway. In this case, is a redirect really required? -- tyagi 12:12, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
New game template fields
These two:
lastgame=List of Systems
nextgame=Media
I assumed these refer to the latest/last game in the franchise, the next in the series or franchise. The template has 'List of Systems' and 'Media', care to explain?
Thanks! --jma 09:30, 4 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Nothing to do with me! There's a discussion in the gameinfobox talk page. Xevious 12:14, 4 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Competition!
- Any chance you could take a read of this thread on Encyclopedia Gamia's forum? -- tyagi 06:41, 10 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- I totally agree with you guys. No point in a merger at the moment, especially given the amount of effort being put in to the framework etc. I've posted on the E.G. forum saying that I favour some form of loose collaboration in terms of content and interwiki linking. I think this could be very productive and benefit both sites. More discussion will probably follow on the E.G. forum. -- tyagi 19:19, 10 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- Boy, am I glad to see you guys still kicking around, sad news is that it seems like that one of the few wikis on games: Gaming Wiki has been deserted and overrun with SPAMbots. --AlphaTwo 16:11, 1 March 2006 (UTC) from Encyclopedia Gamia
Lots of categories
- Following your pub, you've now got three categories which are basically the same:
- GamerWiki Policy
- GamerWiki policies and guidelines
- GamerWiki policy
- Can you decide which one you want? :) Xevious 16:33, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I've been a lazy arse and not checked my shoddy craftsmanship. I'll sort it out. -- tyagi 21:25, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- I've had a scout around and can only see the main policy page at GamerWiki:Policy and the Village Pub discussion page for policy at GamerWiki:Village Pub (policy). I thought I'd cleaned out the "policy and guidelines" tag before and I can't see it now. Do you have a link to the problem area? -- tyagi 21:46, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)
- Looking harder, I've found one category classification and corrected it for 'policy' vs 'Policy'. Hope that's it? -- tyagi 00:27, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Games to be Added
Yes, that format on the Games to be Added list under your user is perfect. I'll get on with some coding tomorrow. Shouldn't be too tricky. Please leave messages on my talk page rather than the bot's. -- tyagi 13:44, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
- If you would like the older Games to be Added processed by the bot, just put them on your /Games to be Added page and I'll run it through. -- tyagi 04:06, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
- The User:Xevious/Games to be Added page needs to be kept clean for the bot. This means that once games are processed, they should be moved to something like User:Xevious/Games added by Tyagibot. I can do this automatically with the bot if you like after a list has been processed? -- tyagi 20:01, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
- Another run of the bot. Again, let me know if anything needs tweaking. It's most important that you let me know of any formatting changes in the page it runs off. -- tyagi 12:02, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- TyagiBot Bug mentioned at Village Pub. I'm notifying you directly so that you're aware. :) --Barthax 09:55, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
- I am working through the thousands of new entries with the bot. The old stuff goes in fast, but anything with cover choices requires manual intervention (i.e. selecting the appropriate cover from a list). So it's slow, but I'll get there. -- tyagi 19:05, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
- Batch 4 is now done.
Bot Enhancements
- I will think of a way to get multi-format automated. I've got an idea, I just need to write it down in clear terms and test the process. It's just a modification to your list. -- tyagi 19:05, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- OK, take a look here and let me know what you think. -- tyagi 20:11, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Doing quite well against the [Category:NeedsCover]] list. The ones that are left are just those I can't find a cover for now. Now to start work on your template-o-matic bot functionality. -- tyagi 23:28, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll try to keep it up, but I should really try and resist - I'm supposed to be revising! -- Jonster 22:56, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
- Interesting about the MAME ROM comment from that user. GamerWiki does come high up in searches for MAME ROMs. Perhaps it's an area we could spend a bit of time on, or try to get some content under the ROM entries on the 'good mame roms list'? Perhaps some people from the newsgroups or forums would be able to add... I wouldn't dream of hosting ROMs, but it would be good to remove the red links. Perhaps encouraging people to add content there from the main page would be an idea. -- tyagi 22:20, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- I can get my bot to go through GamerWiki, search for any article containing 'Coverpicture.jpg' and add it to the NeedsCover category. I'll look it in the next few days. -- tyagi 04:51, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
- Try a Web search for 'mame vertical shooter' and see which site comes out top ;-) bizarre. -- tyagi 10:00, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- The bot development is coming along quite well. It's not fully automated, and I don't want it to be, but it is a command-line tool that I can use that bypasses much of the clicking around to make edits/updates for cover art etc. With regard to the "Weekly releases" and associated template and game entry generation, is there any tool that you think would help semi-automate this task? Is Barthax's form useful as a starting point which we could enhance with some back-end automation to put generated Wiki code in to the database? Also, any other automation ideas, let's discuss (in pub/technical?). -- tyagi 23:11, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
On Recent Changes, you can see what my bot is doing by viewing without bots hidden. I'm trying to automate our routine tasks so that we can get on with interesting stuff. Otherwise it all becomes a chore. -- tyagi 10:36, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
Also, there is now a game template generator GamerWiki:TemplateTemplates, which is installed and running at Special:TemplateTemplates. (courtesy of Barthax) -- tyagi 11:48, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
I'm a bit puzzled - which acronyms weren't acronyms, exactly? (I have no problem in widening the scope to include abbreviations - I'm just puzzled by the comment left.) --Barthax 13:34, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Games to be Added
When a week's games are removed, having been completed, does this include box art, or is it just the template that's been added? Just checking in case I need to write some bot code to look for all articles which use the standard coverimage.jpg and add them in to a category. -- tyagi 13:07, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- Perhaps we could add a 'Needs Cover Art' (or similar) category tag to the default template, that can be removed once art has been added? Can you see another solution for tracking this? -- tyagi 13:56, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
http://www.thegamearchives.com/ --Morpheus 11:07, 30 August 2006 (UTC)--
How about this then? I wonder if I can get the bot to automatically add the Crash score to the Spectrum stuff? -- tyagi 02:06, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Another idea. How about I write something to go through all the game entries, look at the date (year component) and put the page in to a category for that year? We can then see all games from a given year just with the category. We should also do some categories for things like "Crash Smash", "PC Gamer Gold Award" or something? -- tyagi 20:47, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Spectrum Games
If you'd like to mail me the spreadsheet in CSV format, I can parse it and splice in the scores, having read them from data I have here. -- tyagi 11:39, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
