Erm, this isn't actually a game? Xevious 14:49, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

No pages link here - is this page useful? Or am I missing something? -- tyagi 23:56, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

It is not a game, but it is a book that is about video games. This was sort of an experimental post to see how well a non-game entry would mesh with the site. If it's okay with you guys I'd like it kept on the wiki so I could tinker with it a little. --DWhitney 03:22, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Sure, no problem. Is there anything we can link it to so that it forms part of the mesh of information? Perhaps a category at least for this type of info? I just don't want stuff to get lost as stranded pages. Ruins the feng shui y'see. -- tyagi 09:42, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I was thinking about linking it to titles it references and vice versa. A category for oddities like this might be good too. Maybe something general like Game Related Material or Non-Game so a new category doesn't have to be created if someone post something out of the ordinary like the movie The Wizard, a Legend of Zelda action figure, or Super Mario cereal. --DWhitney 13:29, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm a bit concerned about including non-game articles, really. Where do you draw the line? Would you have an article about Friends because one episode had a Ms Pac-Man arcade machine in it? Xevious 17:52, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

I think anything that directly influences or is influenced by video games would be a good place to draw the line. To draw comparisons there is an entry for E3, but E3 is not a game, system, company or person. It was influenced by video games to become it's own show and influences video games by allowing developers to show and promote their work in progress. --DWhitney 01:36, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

The entry for E3's only there because it was created before GamerWiki really had a direction - and you can see from the fact that it's not been updated since April 2005 that it's not really part of the project. I'm just not sure that your definition actually draws a line anywhere. What directly influences videogames? Cars influence games quite a lot, so should we have a page on cars? And trucks? Games influence a lot of things too. Should we have an article on The Face magazine? Tim's Gaming Diary? Dilbert? Xevious 10:20, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Those things stretch the definition a bit. Cars and trucks were created before video games and they'd serve a purpose if video games didn't exist. As far as blogs go it's as simply as laying down the rule no blogs. It can be taken different ways like you've shown, but good judgement can easily fix that. Super Mario Bros. the movie? Probably worth an entry in an encyclopedia of video games. Weekend at Bernie's 2? Not so much. To throw in a little jab the Lucky Wander Boy entry is at the very least content, something the website sorely lacks. You can hit the Random page link 100 times and see the same blank template 100 times. --DWhitney 13:43, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

That's my point though, there is no definition. I think before we start putting things onto the Wiki that aren't games, we need to actually have a definition - which should be threshed out in the Village Pub. And I'm not just talking about this example - also magazines, TV shows and so on which are already partially in the database ought to be discussed. Oh, and it's not the same blank template - there's always at least a publisher and year of release! Xevious 17:05, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

D'oh, you got me there :)! But anyways your right that this should by discussed more in the Pub. I don't think it's something important to work out immediately, but as the site picks up steam more users will join and you'll evantually have someone enter another oddity like this. I guess my four page essay on the Pac-Man toilet seat cover will just have to wait. --DWhitney 20:59, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
