Story

Mario has been invited by Princess Peach to enjoy some cake at her castle. Mario arrives only to find that long time foe Bowser has kidnapped the princess and has sealed off the castle using the power of the stars. It's up to Mario to recover the stars and save Princess Peach once again.

Gameplay

In Super Mario 64 you control Mario as you explore the different worlds found in the paintings around the castle. In each world has several goals for you to complete that award Mario a star. The more stars you have unlock more areas of the castle which opens up new worlds as well. Along with the various worlds there are hidden bonus stages and secrets around the castle. As you move forward you will face off against King Bowser himself.

Mario has more moves now than in any of his previous adventures. Basic moves include walk, run, crouch, crawl, swim, punch and jump. Using different button combinations you can get different jumps including double and triple jumps (one jump after another that increase in height), backward and side somersaults, and long jumps. Along with controlling Mario the player also controls the camera using the C-Buttons to rotate and zoom.
