In Steel Battalion the player pilots battle mechs known as Vertical Tanks in a series of combat missions. The game requires a special 40+ button controller packed with the game to play. The whole package retailed for $199.99 in the United States making it the most expensive game released for the Xbox. The game was re-released along side it's online only sequel Steel Battalion: Line of Contact (Xbox) over a year later.
