Gameplay

Metal Gear follows the stealth gameplay that the rest of the series shares.

Players must navigate the character Snake from the south of the screen to the north, avoiding any guards, traps or animals in their path. If they are seen or heard by these enemies, an "Alert" mode will begin where enemies will search for and attack the player character. If the player avoids the enemies for long enough, a "Caution" mode will begin, where enemies will continue to search in a more sedate fashion. Should the player avoid detection further, the gameplay will return to Normal mode. This encourages players to avoid combat wherever possible.

This basic gameplay is broken up by periods solving maze or key problems, carrying out special missions (such as placing explosives), and period calls from support characters on the in-game "Codec" system, which simulates a radio. This provides plot exposition and player hints and advice. It is accessable at any time in-game should the player wish to gain more information outwith the basics, and allows saving of progress.

Additionally, at key points during gameplay, "Boss" characters with unusual attack patterns and large amounts of stamina will appear, and the player must defeat them to progress. These are usually the only situations in the game where violence is required to continue.

The GameBoy Colour edition shares more than its name with the PlayStation edition of the game; many of the weapons and moves that did not feature in the series until its move to 3D were carried across successfully. This leads many players to pin this game as the finest of the 2D Metal Gear games.

Plot

Seven years after the events of Metal Gear, Solid Snake gets his retirement rudely interrupted by his former commander and several armed soldiers. He is to be sent into the central Africa nation of Gindra, which has stolen a US cargo plane carrying nuclear warheads... and one Metal Gear to launch them. This time, he's up against more than just a few mercenaries, as it seems the Black Chamber, a team of former US Black Ops legends, have a vested interest in seeing him fail.

Trivia

This Metal Gear game, along with Metal Gear: Snake's Revenge on the NES and Metal Gear Ac!d on PSP, represent a non-canonical part in the series. While much of the plot was written by series founder-director Hideo Kojima, he took a producing role for this title's development.

Plot-wise, the game plays out some time after the events of the original MSX game Metal Gear, and can be considered a direct sequel to it, but has no plot links with the rest of the series.

Upon clearing the game, an episodic radio play is unlocked in the Codec radio system, written by Shuyo Murata, writer-director of Zone Of The Enders 2, co-writer of MGS3 and now co-director and co-writer Metal Gear Solid 4. It details the adventures of a bumbling special agent, and shows a bizzare sense of humour that would eventually feature in many Codec conversations in MGS3.
