A Memory card is used to store save games. The memory card was made popular during the 32bit/64bit generation of consoles where both the PlayStation and N64 used them for storing save games. Before then, even though memory cards existed on some consoles, they were not needed or popular. Most save games were stored on the cartridge themselves. However because the PlayStation used a CD-ROM and had no on-board memory the save-game data had to be stored on an external memory card.
