Description

Mario Tennis is a followup to the original Tennis released on the Game Boy. However, Mario Tennis expands the former game considerably, by including an RPG-style levelling-up system and training system within the game.

Story

You play a generic male or female character who is starting at a tennis academy. You must train, play singles and doubles games, and explore the academy in order to progress to the championship level.

Gameplay

The tennis itself is relatively simple, with the two face buttons on the Game Boy Color used to add top-spin, slice or flat to every shot. The colour of a ball's flight path indicates which sort of shot has been played.

Training courts

In order to progress and build up your abilities, you must practise on the traning courts. This help to improve:

  • Net play
  • Stroke
  • Serve

Each of these can be practised, and then must be used on a seperate court to gain experience points.

In addition, the training centre includes a number of minigames which can be used to train. These include:

  • Wall training (to hit specific areas)
  • Tennis machine training (to return shots)
