List of First-Person Shooter control options
From GamerWiki
More than any other genre, modern first-person shooting games require complex control mechanisms. Some players find that it is very difficult to adapt from one control mechamism to another, due to legacy controls, left- or right-handedness, or a number of other reasons. This page details which control mechanisms are available in all full-3D games (that is, where players are able to look up and down), for games released on consoles since the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation.
There are four main control schemes available in first-person shooting games. These are:
- Control Scheme 1 (known as "Default" in Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)) - the left stick contains walk fowards and backwards, and sidestep. The right stick contains look up and down, and turn left and right.
- Control Scheme 2 (known as "Legacy") - the left stick contains walk fowards and backwards, and turn left and right. The right stick contains look up and down, and sidestep.
- Control Scheme 3 (known as "Southpaw") - the left stick contains look up and down, and turn left and right. The right stick contains walk fowards and backwards, and sidestep.
- Control Scheme 4 (known as "Legacy Southpaw") - the left stick contains look up and down, and sidestep. The right stick contains walk fowards and backwards, and turn left and right.
In addition, most games offer the option to invert the Y-axis on the controls to look up and down, to mirror the controls of an aeroplane.
Note that this page does not contain details of controls in first-person shooting games on the PC. This is because these are virtually always fully customisable, and use a mouse and keyboard control scheme. Also, games are listed with a seperate entry for each platform. This is because the available options may differ between platform.
Games are initally listed in alphabetical order but can be sorted by any criteria.
