Help talk:Creating multi-format

  • Step 17 will probably need to be changed once Tyagi's sorted out the dismbiguation process. I think even if that page changes, we ought to include links to the various formats in the main body of the text. It's quite neat the way it bolds the current format you're looking at! • I've taken a first go at GamerWiki:Disambiguation, please post comments on the discussion page there. As far as the Multi-Format entries go, I think this will work quite well. The one thing that still makes me nervous is polluting the Template: namespace with game titles. Therefore, I want to experiment with the format: Template:GameEntry/title, which should work and will contain everything under Template:Games/. This will prevent names clashing with actually useful templates. At the end of the day, we're not using the template feature properly by putting general information under it that is just for automatic insertion. I will look at whether there is another way. Comments? -- tyagi 12:38, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
  • The approach of using Template:Games/title seems to work OK and will contain the games under a single Template sub-category without polluting the main Template namespace. Example on GamerWiki:Sandbox. Does Template:Games/title seem or, or any other ideas? -- tyagi 12:59, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
  • As in the previous note - a format such as "Template:Games/title" works OK and will contain the game information templates. Do we agree that this is the way to structure the game template system? -- tyagi 07:18, 20 Jul 2005 (UTC)
  • I think it sounds fine - it solves the problem of Template namespace pollution, but still allows us to have a single page for the story and generic info for a multi-format game. One thing - you seem unclear about what the 'formats' template is for. This basically allows us to use the same text in the 'Additional Formats' section of the game template, without having to rejig it all. It's most useful when someone doesn't include all the formats initially - then it's a case of a single edit rather than four or five. For example, look at the Sonic Heroes pages now - the penultimate section is broken, and we'll have to replace that with the relevent text again. Xevious 09:19, 20 Jul 2005 (UTC)
  • Yes, you're right. I'll either reinstate the template or find a different way of doing it. Having the different formats listed is useful but I'm not sure about a small template there just to do that. -- tyagi 09:34, 20 Jul 2005 (UTC)
  • OK, I've re-worked it slightly. Things are now under Templates:Games/, which makes it neater. The formats template, I've changed slightly so that it just contains a list of the platforms. The disambiguation page includes this template list, as does the game's main text description. Seems to work, but I'm not sure how usable it is for others not familiar with this system. -- tyagi 11:07, 20 Jul 2005 (UTC)
  • Step 2 needs reworking - the need to add the game to the individual lists only remains necessary if the individual is not going to create the game's page(s). If they are going to be created (reading the multi-format page suggests they are going to) then there is no requirement to manually add the game - it will be auto-added to the relevant category once it's created. --Barthax 11:09, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

  • I've removed the instructions related to this. I don't think it adds anything now that when you click through to edit a page, you're given a list of the templates that are called from that page. It looks untidy on the game pages too. We ought to just get rid of the existing ones bit by bit, as we come across them. Xevious 17:00, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
