Hell Rising is a text-based MMORPG taking place in the fictional area of Twilight City, which has been overrun by the undead. Players can choose to play as one of three different classes, humans, zombies, or vampires, all of which have unique skills. Humans become either vampires or zombies when killed, depending on the class of the killer, and zombies and vampires can return to their human form when a human injects them with a revival syringe and revival serum.

The game is closely modeled on the 2005 browser game Urban Dead.

Gameplay

Action points, which the player receives at the rate of 15 per hour, are used every time the player performs any type of activity, such as moving and attacking. When a player reaches 0 AP, they cannot perform any form of action until the next AP regeneration.

When a player attacks an enemy or heals an ally, they receive experience points. These experience points, or "XP" can be used to buy new skills to enhance their character. Skills cost 50 experience points at their base, plus 10 XP for every skill the player already has.

Much of the game play revolves around Fort Howard, which humans attempt to defend, while vampires and zombies make raids on attempting to rid the fort of humans. Some human groups who support the undead way kill other humans through player killing. A small group of bounty hunters attempt to hunt down and kill these "tkers".

Classes

New characters have the total of 17 sub-classes to choose from. 7 are human and both zombies and vampires have 5. Humans being fast but weaker have a 60 action point max with a 40 max health. Zombies are slow but strong with a 40 action point max and 60 health max. Vampires are a balanced class with a 50 action point and health max.

Players can easily switch between classes either through death or a revival serum. Humans can be a Soldier, Police Officer, Firefighter, Doctor, Carpenter, Convict, or Vagrant. Zombies can be a Fresh Corpse, Early Victim, Frenzied Corpse (Not released yet), Festering Cadaver, or Mangled Victim. Vampires can be a Feeder, Predator, Beast, Maniac, or Carrier. These classes have no actual effect on gameplay, however, they do choose your starting skill. For humans they also choose your starting clothes and inventory.
