Description

Halo: Combat Evolved (commonly referred to as simply Halo) is a First-Person Shooter released for Microsoft's Xbox and the PC. As the Xbox's flagship launch game, it had the daunting task of convincing many that Microsoft's system was worth a purchase. Many people believe that were it not for Halo, the Xbox would have sunk without a trace. As it is, the game sold exceptionally, and for many was the system's killer app.

Gameplay

Played from a first-person perspective similiar to games such as Doom and Half-Life, the player shoots his way through enemies, whilst progressing through the game's expansive levels towards his objective. However, Halo introduced several gameplay innovations which have since won it many plaudits and imitators:

  • The game pioneered a rechargable shield system. Instead of a conventional health meter, players had a shield which could repair itself - only once the shield was fully depleted would players take damage to their health. This encouraged intellegent use of cover on the player's behalf.
  • Vehicles were introduced. Though this had been attempted before, Halo was the first to allow players to use vehicles seemlessly to traverse the huge areas.
  • Halo set new standards for AI. Enemies convincingly took cover, defended their positions and even ran away.

Story

Players take control of Master Chief A.K.A. Spartan 117, a cyborg super soldier. When his ship crashlands on a mysterious ring floating in space call halo, the player must unlock the secrets within.
