Story

The knight Arthur journeys through the netherworld to defeat the Demon King Lucifer (Loki in some regions) and reclaim the soul of Princess Guinevere (Princess Prin Prin in some regions).

Gameplay

Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is the follow up to Capcom's fondly remembered 1985 platformer Ghosts 'n' Goblins. The gameplay remains largely unaltered; the player controls the knight Arthur who runs and jumps through increasingly trecherous levels fending off demonic creatures by throwing various weapons at them. As in the first game Arthur can only survive two hits from his attackers, the first destorying his suit of armour and the second robbing him of his life.

Ghouls 'n' Ghosts features several refinements to the original games basic setup; Arthur can now throw weapons upwards (and downwards when in midair) and there is a golden suit of armour powerup which allows a special attack to be unleashed when the fire button is held for a period of time.

Like its predecessor Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is a very unforgiving game, many sections and setpieces being near impossible without memorising the timing of each jump and position of each enemy. If this wasn't enough the ending featured the particularly cruel twist of dumping the player back at the beginning of the game unless they managed to defeat the final boss with a gold suit of armour intact.

Ghouls 'n' Ghosts features wonderfully creepy graphics from the outset with the first level's gloriously macabre landscape of guillotines and skeleton strewn ruins. The chip music soundtrack is also perfectly judged drawing from vintage horror movie soundtracks with a seperate theme for each level.
