Story

Geometry Wars doesn't have a story, instead focusing on the action.

Gameplay

The game takes place on a 2D plane that is bigger than the screen. The player can move and shoot in 360 degrees at any time. The left analogue stick controls the movement, and the right analogue the direction of fire - as such it is possible to shoot in a direction different to that of movement. The player also has smart bombs, which destroy everything on the screen (but not play area - also points are not earned for the destroyed enemies), which are activated using either of the triggers.

The aim of the game is to get as high a score as possible by shooting the randomly spawning enemies. Initially they spawn slowly and sparesly, however as the game progresses more enemies spawn quicker and in more complex patterns. If the player touches an enemy they lose a life. The player starts with 3 lives and 3 bombs.

Enemies

Most enemies can be destroyed with one hit of a bullet. The enemies don't have given names, so the name given is a general description of their appearance.

Purple Pinwheel: These just float about in a random direction not homing in on the player. They are worth 25 points.

Blue Diamond: These home in towards the player ship, however move fairly slowly and are easily avoided. Killing one gives 50 points.

Green Square: These home in on the player pretty quickly, however can't turn very well and also dodge bullets, which can make them hard to kill. They are worth 100 points.

Pink Squares: These home in on the player quickly and can turn well. When shot they split into 3 smaller versions, which move towards the player by moving in a circle. The big square is worth 100 points, the smaller ones are worth 50.

Black Hole: On spawning the black hole (which is an empty red circle) stays still and does nothing, however once shot starts sucking things into it. It also has a force around it that can repel bullets if shot from far away, and it takes multiple bullets to destroy. If it takes in too many things it explodes into a number of small Blue Circles which are incredibly fast and home in on the player, this can be stopped by shooting it though, although it takes more bullets after it's grown. The Black Hole is worth 150 points + 25 points for every enemy sucked in. The Blue Circles are worth 50 points each.

Snake: The snakes have long tails and a blue head, and can only be destroyed by hitting the head, although any part of the snake is deadly. These move in a snake like fashion, homing towards the player. They are worth 50 points.

Blue Jacks: Blue Jacks spawn from the corners of the screen and are the snallest enemy in the game. They often spawn in mass and it is required to shoot a path through them. They are worth 10 points each.

Red ship: These look like the player ship, except that they are red. They move incredibly quickly and home towards the player. They also put out a force field in front of them that deflects bullets. They can't turn very much when moving, often stopping and rotating on the spot to face the player again. They are worth 150 points.

Bonuses

After 10,000 points the default firing pattern changes to either a fast and narrow stream, or a slow and wide pattern. Every 10,000 points after this it changes randomly, and it never changes back to the original pattern (which is 2 bullets travelling in a straight line).

Also a multiplier is earned after a certain number of enemies are killed. A x2 multiplier is earned after killing 25 enemies, and the multiplier goes up to x10, but this requires 2,000 enemies to be destroyed. If the player dies the multiplier is reset to x1.

Every 75,000 points an extra life is earned and every 100,000 an extra bomb is awarded.
