Flash memory is a hybrid of ROM (Read Only Memory) and RAM (Random Access Memory). By modern standards (2005) you can fit upto 2GB of storage in a card the size of a postage stamp.

In simple terms flash memory is:

  • Rewritable
  • Fast
  • Compact
  • Does not lose stored data when unpowered

An example of a device that use's Flash memory would be a USB memory stick, memory cards for the Sony PSP, Nokia phones, Digital camera etc.
