A first-person shooter (FPS) is a type of game in the first-person perspective, whereby the primary aim is usually to kill the opponent. It is usually associated with the PC platform, as the games are usually comparatively difficult to control on games controllers.

The modern format of the genre is widely considered to have began with iD Software's Wolfenstein 3D. The genre can trace it's steps through attempts such as 3D Death Chase on the ZX Spectrum and even further back to Battlezone in 1980 neither of which were fully able to capture a true 3D environment but still portrayed FPS in the game play.
