Description
Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystera is a fantasy-themed Final Fight style scrolling fighting game with RPG elements. This is the second side-scrolling Dungeons & Dragons fighting game from Capcom, being a sequel to 1994's Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom.
Shadow over Mystera further developed the fairly simplistic RPG elements introduced to the genre by its prequel, extending the magic system by including a mage character class, and adding extra class-specific abilities such as the thief's sneak attack.
The action involves traversing a medieval-themed world rendered in impressively detailed 2D sprites, and fighting traditional D&D enemies such as lizard men and rust monsters. The combat uses a relatively sophisticated (for the genre) system which allows for a wide range of attacks and basic combos. Magical characters can also cast spells and a good variety of Dungeons & Dragons-style items can be collected and used along the journey. Players who stick with it long enough will eventually uncover the ultra-secret hidden Sword of Legend.
Co-operation between players is encouraged by the inclusion of team-up attacks, and at certain points in the game players can unlock special features by working together.
Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystera was converted to the Sega Saturn and released together with its prequel as the Dungeons & Dragons Collection. This was its only conversion to a home format.
