Doom 3 is essentially a direct sequel to the original Doom game from the early 1990s, which was one of the most influential titles in the recent history of gaming. Doom 3 took its premise, and updated its relentless shooting mechanic, giving it a cutting edge graphics engine with scares and plot driving devices taken straight from System Shock 2 (PC). Whilst some criticised this for not being as sophisticated an experience as expected in the era of Far Cry and Half-Life 2, others praised it for being a triumph of experience-led gaming.

Story
On Mars, a large corporation has set up a base researching teleportation technologies. You are a recently arrived Marine charged with investigating the recent mysterious disappearances plaguing the base, and dealing with the carnage that quickly follows your arrival, before finally journeying to Hell and back.
Gameplay
Governed mainly by a traditional FPS mechanic, attempts were made to diversify by the use of "PDAs" to give the player access to the logs of dead staff. Whilst this is a thinly-veiled update of key/lock dynamics of yore, they do help to give a much-needed Aliens feel, as well as some depth, to the plot.
