Description
Condemned: Criminal Origins is a horror game, released at the launch of the Xbox 360 and subsequently on the PC.
Story
A serial killer is on the loose and it's up to Agent Thomas, of the FBI's Serial Crime Unit (SCU), to hunt them down.
Using his own heightened instincts and a wide variety of forensic tools, as well as an array of firearms and melee weapons, he must persue the killer even if it costs him his job or, more likely, his sanity.
Gameplay
The game is set from a 1st person viewpoint and is from the Half-life school of shooters, as players focus more on the story rather than run and gun tactics.
In fact, players have to rely on whatever weapons comes to hand most of the time as guns can be few and far between so it's up to you to clean up the streets with a crowbar, 2x4 or mannequin arm!
The combat is fairly simplistic however, as players can only attack or block (which requires pretty good timing) and this can become repetitive. Also due to the realistic nature of the game there is a very limited selection of enemies and once you learn their habits it can become fairly routine to see them off.
The game does a good job of building up the atmosphere and relies on dark and moody environments and a suitably grim soundtrack. The story is well worked, with enough twists to keep you off balance and wanting more right up until the ending.
On the Xbox 360, collecting weapons, evidence, metal pieces and, strangely, birds all go some way towards gaining acheivement points. Some require more effort than others and it does provide a good replay value to track down every item. Though the game can be accused of a slight number of glitches in this regard as the internal memory seems to have trouble keeping up with the numbers of items you've grabbed or whether you actually used a weapon.
The presentation and graphics are very well done conveying a real sense of the unexpected and the story flows pretty nicely, but the game can get a bit repetitive and is pretty linear.
Trivia
- The dead birds that you collect may seem random, but if you read the story snippets that pop up on the loading screen between chapters you'll see that they actually link in with the rest of the story.
- You can actually choose one of two endings if you sit through part of the credits.
