A CPU is a Micro-Processing Unit (MPU) at the Centre of the machine: hence, Central Processing Unit (CPU). Many modern MPUs have built-in functionality for tasks which have traditionally been external to the CPU itself such as the memory controller. An MPU with such functionality is termed a Micro-Controller Unit (MCU) instead. Only when an MPU or MCU is at the heart of a machine does it become a CPU - it is merely a term of affection and is often misused to represent an MPU elsewhere in a system.
