Gameplay
Single player mode is accessed via the World Tour option, however the game is also playable online and offline in multiplayer modes. Several standards exist throughout all raced styled game modes (ie not crash) though:
- You earn boost by hitting opponents, driving on the wrong side of the road, drifting, and almost hitting traffic - among others.
- Hitting small traffic (ie cars and vans) travelling in the same direction as yourself does not cause you to crash, but instead propels the car hit forwards - this can be used to score takedowns in single player.
- Hitting traffic that isn't small (buses and trucks), or travelling towards you causes you to crash.
- Takedowns increase the size of the boost bar and fill it up, to a maximum of 4 times the original length.
Single Player Events
Progress in single player mode is made by earning ranking points and medals (which add or take away to the ranking depending on the medal earned) to unlock new tracks and cars. Holding the boost button after crashing allows you to steer your wreck, if you hit an opponent you score a takedown - known as aftertouch.
Race
The standard race mode sees you racing five computer contolled racers to see who can get to the finish line first. Making a computer car crash, into a wall or traffic, causes a takedown and increases your boost bar. You get a rolling start and always start in 4th position.
Road Rage
Take down as many computer cars as possible within the time limit, while avoiding wreaking your car. This is the only mode where you can end the event by crashing too much.
Traffic Attack
There's no race here, the idea is to cause as much damage to traffic as possible (measured in money). Your boost bar constantly stays at four times in length, but does require filling. This mode has a time limit, however when the limit is under 20 seconds, it is increased by hitting traffic - the increase is the same as the damage caused to each hit car where $1,000 = 1 second. It can't be increased above 20 seconds however. Also there's no aftertouch in this mode.
Time Attack
Is a time trial to complete one lap. Boost is incredibly easy to earn in this mode (in fact it's possible to increase the boost meter while boosting), but the time to get a gold medal are usually very strict.
Preview Event
Is a Time Attack event, but with a car or location you won't have unlocked at the time.
Grand Prix
A series of at least three races done back to back, with points scoring awarded depending on position.
Crash
The idea of Crash mode is to cause as big a car wreck as possible. In the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions you begin with a golf styled swingometer with which to start the car, but in the Xbox 360 version you simply press A and get the maximum boost every time. Crashing into a car starts the crash breaker meter, which when full allows you to detonate your car like a bomb to cause even more damage.
Crashbreaker Race
Like a normal race, however if you get taken down you can use a crashbreaker. Using a crashbreaker uses all the boost bar, however, so if you don't take something down you'll restart with no boost available.
Crashbreaker Road Rage
Like normal Road Rage, but again with crashbreakers.
Online Multiplayer
Online multiplayer removes the aftertouch feature for races (as it would be impossible to implement) but still features takedowns and traffic checking.
Race
A standard race for 2-6 players, unlike the single player races you don't get a rolling start. It is possible to boost start, and several methods are used. Starting positions are random.
Team Road Rage
A road rage styled event for 2-6 players. Players are divided into two teams, blue and red. Blue team get a 5 second head start and start in positions 1, 2 and 3 on the grid. However the red team get infinate boost (depending on settings). The idea of the game is for the red team to take down each of the blue team before the blue team can reach the finish line. Taking out the red team causes damage instead of elimination and too much damage (from any crashes, for any player) also causes elimination.
Crash
Each player plays on the same crash junction and the standard rules apply, however however causes the most damage wins.
Trivia
- The Xbox 360 version has all cars and tracks unlocked when playing online.
