Black is a first-person shooter in which the player acts as a member of a secret division - Black Ops - who infiltrate and eliminate terrorist operations. The game was developed by Criterion, the makers of the Burnout series, and the development team stated that they wish Black to be to first-person shooters as Burnout was to racing games.

Story
The game's story is told in terms of flashback sequences. The player's character is interrogated in cutscenes between each level over his involvement in the raids which the player then plays. The story revolves around a special operations division operating on the border of illegality, and the consequences of this.
Gameplay
The game is a strictly-scripted shooter, with limited scope for path choices. Players must progress from one checkpoint to another, but normally have no time limit in which to do this. If a player is killed, they are returned to the last checkpoint passed; these checkpoints are around twenty minutes apart on the first play through.
Weapons limit
As with Halo, the game allows players to carry only two guns, meaning that decisions must be made over the firepower needed in each section of the game; however, a player is normally able to return to previously dropped weapons to exchange them.
There are a limited number of weapons available falling into the categories of:
- pistol
- shotgun
- machine gun
- assault rifle
- grenade launcher
- rocket launcher
- sniper rifle
Each of these weapons types has a distinct firing rate, accuracy, and possible zoom level.
Health system
The player's health is represented by a bar in the top left of the screen. If this bar diminishes to two or three (red) markers, the player will find their character unsteady on their feet, unable to aim, and they will have difficulty focusing on enemies. Colours will also disappear from the screen. To recover, the player may hide for a sufficient time without being caught in gunfire, although this will only increase the health bar to the minimum green level.
Two other methods of regaining health are available. 'First-aid kits' are dropped by some enemies; when these are picked up they automatically fill the health bar by around a third. Furthermore, 'health packs' are hidden in some areas; these may be picked up and up to three carried around, so that the player may recover health as and when they choose.
Trivia
- Discarded weapons appear to stay on the floor for longer in the Xbox version of the game, probably due to increased memory.
