Gameplay

In Archer Maclean's Mercury, the player takes control of the playing area, in an attempt to complete certain tasks using their designated Mercury for that level in a certain time limit. Levels are split into five different types, each with their own unique themes based on level design. These are,

  • Race - Levels with simple pathways to the finish and few tasks with a mostly linear route.
  • Percentage - Levels designed to be make you deliberatly lose mercury, full of thin pathways and hazards.
  • Task - Levels with non-linear routes, filled with switches and puzzles.
  • Combo - A mixture of Percentage and either a Race or a Task level.
  • Boss - A mixture of Race, Percentage and Task themed levels.
  • Bonus - Similar to Boss levels, but with a substantial increase in difficulty.

The game consists of 7 different worlds, each that are unique in their design and art style. These are

  • Neon
  • Quartz
  • Xero
  • Aqua
  • Helios
  • Nano

The 7th world is locked at the start of the game, and so the name of it is not listed.

You start each level with 100% of mercury, in 1 or more blobs. To complete a level, the Mercury has to touch the finish switch on most levels, or hit all the switches on other levels. Many obstacles stand in the way of your mercury and the completion of the level, which range from mercury-eating creatures called Mercoids, to the Jacob's Ladder that will zap your Mercury away if you are in firing range. To progress through levels, tasks like opening up gates, changing colour of the Mercury, mixing Mercury and lowering bridges will occur.
