While arcade games are known for their dedicated hardware, there are a number of systems available which allow different games to be run using the same cabinet and basic processor motherboard.

Arcade System Types

Many arcade manufacturers used similar hardware set ups regularly for different games. Few of these hardware set ups are true system types in themselves (i.e., a generic system set up capable of playing multiple games). Instead most have generic interface types capable of running different ROM chips. However, no distinction is made here.

Many system names come from the name of the first or most popular game to have been produced on the hardware. Additionally, older systems tended not to be named and are therefore referred to by their common hardware components instead ("Dual Motorola 68000" for example).
