Description
A 16k classic - 3D Deathchase put you in charge of a superbike tearing through the forests. Avoiding trees, shooting copters and other bikes, this early Spectrum release set a standard that was still being deemed unreachable by later 48k (and indeed, even 128k) releases.
Story
According to the inlay card; "It is 2501, one hundred years after the Great War and the North American continent is ruled by mighty warlords in constant conflict over forest territory. You are one of the elite mercenaries, Riders of the Big Bikes..." and so forth.
Fast, furious 3d with alternating day and night sections. Palm-sweaty goodness!
Gameplay
Day and night stages (made apparent by resourceful use of alternate colour palletes) pitted you, the 'big biker' at the bottom of the screen, with headlamp jutting into view (and resembling something fairly phallic if you're that way inclined, particularly when 'firing'). Always driving into the screen, bonus points could be collected on route by either shooting down rogue bikers or helicopters. Acceleration and deceleration determined how close or distant the targets were, and you had to concentrate on avoiding the mighty tree trunks pending from the far distance.
Almost flip-book shaky by todays 60fps standards, Deathchase offered a believable 3D experience that is, amazingly, still fun to play.
Game Rules
Get as far as you can. Score is awarded based on distance travelled and enemies shot. There was even a 'range' indicator at the bottom of the screen to tell you when enemies were close enough to fire upon.
Survive as long as you can using left, right, accelerate, decellerate and fire, with each successive stage getting more arborious and 'target-rich'.
