The current featured article is: MAME

MAMETM stands for the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. The project began in 1996 when Nicola Salmoria developed a suite of emulators for specific arcade machines. This software was subsequently merged in to a single program in 1997. The merged suite of hardware emulation code was named MAME (pronounced in the same way as maim in the English language).

MAME is most popular for running MAME ROM images, which are binary dumps of arcade videogame software. This software is packaged in to a standardised format in order to be run on the MAME emulation system.

Despite the relative success of Mario's Picross on the Game Boy, there was no English-language version of the game released between March 1995 (when the Game Boy game was released) and 26 October 2006 (when Essential Sudoku DS, which contains picross puzzles in equal measure to sudoku grids, was released). There were, however, a number of sequels released in Japan, for the Game Boy and the SNES, including eight packs of puzzles accessed via the Satallaview system. Puzzle grids from some of these releases, including the original Mario's Picross, will be available as downloadable packs for Picross DS, which was released in Europe on 11th May.
